John C. HAZLEWOOD was b. 2 Nov., 1841 in Union, SC, d. 12 Oct, 1921, Martins Mill, TX. He is buried in Holly Springs Cemetery by his wife, Lucinda Caroline JOHNSON. John C. is on the 1850 cen. In Cobb Co., GA with his parents and siblings. He was married in St. Clair Co., AL and moved to Prentiss Co., MS by 1870. In Oct 1892 John C. moved to VanZandt Co., TX in the Martins Mill Community. He served in Co. D, Phillips Legion, GA, during the Civil War where he enlisted at the beginning of the war and served for its duration. He was discharged at Selma, AL at the close of the war and according to his pension application papers on file in Austin, TX, he was a “good soldier.” In the army of Northern Virginia, Phillips Legion was at different times part of the Drayton’s, Cobb’s, Wofford’s and Debose’s Brigades and also served in the Divisions of Johns’, Kershaws’ and McClains. Family tradition says that John and his 5 brothers served in the Civil War. The names of his 5 brothers are known but this submitter does not have complete war service for all of the brothers.

William HAZLEWOOD’s physical description was given by his widow, Sarah, in her application for a pension (William served in the War of 1812). He was five feet tall, dark hair, dark complexion and blue eyes. She stated in the application that William received 2 land warrants for his war service, one in 1853 and one in 1854 or 55. He served in Captain Thomas WHITE’S Co. as a private in the regiment of the SC militia commanded by Col. Hugh MEANS. Sarah made the application, 1878 from her home in Madison, AL.

William HAZLEWOOD, father of our John Christopher had brothers named, Warrick, Issac and John.
Thomas Napoleon JOHNSON was b. 27 June, 1821 in Lawrence, AL. He married Nancy HEAD about 1845 in St. Clair Co. AL. Thomas died Sep., 1894 in Martins Mill, TX and is buried in Holly Springs Cemetery in Martins Mill.
Thomas Napoleon’s parents were:
Thomas JOHNSON and Martha “Patty” CAPPS. They married in Lawrence, AL, 27 Feb., 1820.
Nancy HEAD was born in GA about 1828 and died in St. Clair, AL about 1872. Her parents are not known to this submitter but a brother of Nancy’s lived in Martins Mill. His name: Rev. John W. HEAD, b. 7 Mar., 1833, d. 26 Feb., 1899 and is buried in Liberty Cemetery. This data is on his tombstone however, the 1860 Federal Cen for VanZandt Co., shows John W. b 1827 (see John in photo - photo not available).
